Mission: Hopkins the Line of Fire
Location: Arboretum, Picnic Area
Timeline: MD 2, 1820 HRS

Lieutenant Harper entered the arboretum, he was less than thrilled about the gathering but figured it was bad form to not attend. He had been in his office going over the the final short list for deputy and figured he should come at least put an appearance in. He made his way to the picnic area, and took an offered glass of some sort of synthetic alcohol. He took a sip and grimaced slightly, it was far too sweet for his taste, and quickly found a table to set it down on. His eyes scanned the area looking for a familiar face.

T'Lara pivoted Sabien toward the security chief. She had a sense that this was one paring that could only happening at such a gathering.

"I hope you've finally found yourself a place to stay, Lieutenant," T'Lara stated warmly, before introducing Sabien with a wave of her hand. "Doctor Sabien Krios, meet Ethan Harper our new chief of security."

"Good to meet you Lieutenant." Sabien said as he offered his hand for the standard Terran handshake. "So I assume you are the one to contact for the station's Vole infestation?" he said as a joke.

"I'm sure engineering can handle any voles, and yes Commander I have a home now." He said with a polite smile.

"We have voles?" T'lara inquired.

"I believe the Lieutenant was joking Commander." Ethan replied with a small smirk. "At least I haven't come across any."

"Your assumption is correct." Sabien said with a deadpan voice. "Did my facial expression not show that?" he said looking at both the Commander and the Lieutenant knowing fully well his amphibian features did not conform to human facial expressions.

"There was an Admiral who felt strongly that our arboretum should feature a pair of every bird mentioned in Shakespeare's sonnets," T'Lara explained, "I was worried that we missed the request for rodents. If all is as its supposed to be, we should be the only animals in this part of the station."

She sat on the edge of the table where Lieutenant Harper had put down his drink. "Occasionally, someone's personal pet will escape from their quarters, and then it does become the security departments job to track them down," she informed the Lieutenant. "With luck, you'll get to meet Doctor Yuan's rag doll cats. The incident reports tend to emphasize the animals' sweet disposition and fluffiness."

"I was always a dog person myself. I'm hoping to get one again once this war is over and things calm down a bit," Ethan said.

Although the event was intended to get the crew's minds off war and conflict, T'Lara found the security officer's comment intriguing. "Once this war is over?" she mused, "Are you privy to some special intelligence on that matter, or is that optimism?"

Sabien scoffed at the droll humor of the Commanding officer, "Surely, optimism is not an alien virtue to Vulcans."

"Just optimism." He said shaking his head slightly.
